Vitamin Supplements - Do You Need Them?

Vitamin supplements are one of the most popular dietary supplements people consume these days. Many people worry that they do not get enough vitamins from their diet and go for the pills, but do you really need them?

Vitamins are essential nutrients for good health. They can regulate body metabolism, act as antioxidants to salvage free radicals, improve immune system and energy level, reduce stress response, enhance mental clarity, and prevent vitamin deficiency diseases.

In general, vitamins are abundant in fresh foods, such as fresh meat, legumes, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. People who consume a healthy and balanced diet with a wide variety of fresh foods should have adequate vitamin supply. However, in reality, many people do not consume a healthy diet. Their diet may be high in meat and fat, low in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, or they do not prepare the food properly such as eating fast food and deep-fried food or just heating up a frozen diet using the microwave. Improper food storage, food preparation and cooking practice can destroy some vitamins in food.

Whether you need vitamin supplements or not depends on your own lifestyle. If you live a healthy life, with minimum exposure to radiation, toxic chemicals, pollution and eat a balanced diet of wide variety of fresh food, you may not require vitamin supplements after all.

On the contrary, if you are too busy to cook for yourself or prepare a healthy balanced diet, consume refined foods more often than fresh foods, feel tired all the time, suffer from high stress level and weak immune function, vitamin supplements may be beneficial to you.

Vitamins A-K work synergistically with each other, so it is better to consume complete multi-vitamins instead of single vitamin supplements. Most of these daily complete vitamins also comply with the recommended daily allowance for vitamins, which means that the vitamin levels are sufficient to ward off vitamin deficiency diseases. Nevertheless, the recommended daily intake does not represent the amount of vitamins required for optimal health, which may vary among individuals based on their age, health conditions and stress level, etc.

If you decide to take vitamin supplements, do bear in mind that they are not magical pills. Changing your diet and eating style, staying active and avoiding unhealthy habits such as heavy drinking and cigarette smoking are just as important if not more important than the consumption of dietary supplements.

The Legacy of the British Raj in India

The British ruled over and administered India for the best part of 100 years. They started trading with India in the early 1600s. By the mid 1700s they were engaged in fighting against various kingdoms. By the mid 1800s they were fully in control of the Indian subcontinent and were either directly administering through the means of the Indian civil service, or were letting the local Maharajahs administer their own Kingdoms as long as the Maharajahs were paying the British the desired license fee and were prepared to follow the terms and conditions set out by the British.

In 1947 the British left India partitioned into India and Pakistan as a result of which over one million people died in migration between the two new countries. In addition India was virtually bankrupt with very little infrastructure or industry. Yet when the British first went to India in the 1600s it was a very prosperous place with a large GDP and a huge manufacturing base, which is the reason why the British wanted to trade in the first place. The conclusion being that the British left India in a far worse state then how they found it.

Since 1947 India has developed all its infrastructure and industries from ground up, including roads, agriculture, textiles, steel, nuclear, space, military, telecoms and IT and much more. It has made so much progress that some consider it to be a potential global superpower in the very near future, and this has all happened within 60 years of The British leaving India.

So what really was the legacy of the British in India? Many would say that the British went into a prosperous land, bled it dry, and then left. Others would say the British brought culture (education to the heathens), technology and of course the great English language to a country that otherwise would never have experienced all of this.

But one point that often gets missed is that India is now a united country with a democracy and all the relevant institutions needed to sustain democracy, like a judiciary and armed forces. The British had a big hand in this although their motives were all together different. Basically when the British came to India in the 1600s, it was a fragmented country with many little kingdoms none of whom liked each other. The British took advantage of these differences and slowly gobbled up each kingdom, eventually bringing the sum total of all these kingdoms under British rule. Eventually when the British left they handed over a united India.

It seems that this unification could only have been achieved by an alien power like the British because the Kingdoms hated each other to the extent that they would join the British against each other, yet they would not join each other against the British. This character flaw in the Indian persona is exactly what the British exploited and is also why it would have been very difficult for the Indians to have unified by themselves without some external influence.

India has made great progress over the last 60 years because it is unified. Surely this has to be counted as an important British legacy.

Top 6 Reports

If the mass media cared more about studies, it would have done a rating of the most popular reports. But since it doesnt care, then Im the one to tell you about successful report writing and the rules in writing a report. So, here are our top report writings.

Writing a Book Report

The style of writing a book report can be different. Three ways of report writing are: writing summaries, character analyses, and theme analyses. Writing a book report helps you practice giving your opinion about different aspects of a book, such as the author's use of description or dialogue.

Writing a Business Report

As the business environment grows in its complexity, the importance of skillful communication and report writing becomes essential. A business report conveys information to assist in decision-making. Some people are writing business reports to solve a business problem; other people record historical information that will be useful to assist in future decision making. Either way, information is being "reported" that will be useful in making decisions.

Writing a Case Report

Writing a case report is common in medicine. What do you need to do it for? Publication of case reports serves to offer new information for review by others practicing the same concept. Often, as part of your course requirements, you will need to present your instructor with a written case analysis. This may be done either individually or in a group. Anyway, writing a report is essential.

Psychological Report Writing

Psychological report writing is an exposition of a psychological evaluation; it includes conclusions and predictions about a specific person or persons. The report writing can be done with the help of concrete previous experiences, brainstorms and deep analysis of the psychologist or any other person, academic or not, connected somehow to the problem.

Writing a Research Report

Research report writing informs about the results of researches, field work, and other activities. Often, research report is the only concrete evidence of your research, and the quality of the research may be judged directly by the quality of the writing and how well you convey the importance of your findings. Even if you don't consider yourself a writer, then it is still important to consider clarity and organization when you are doing your report writing.

Writing Analytical Reports

The purpose of any analytical report writing is to provide an informative description of the results of the writers findings. The report is not a record of the writers thinking process, but rather a good report writing of the results of that process. The writer is ready to write this report when he/she feels that further analysis and thought would add nothing more.

As to the techniques of writing a report, they are simple. A topic is essential in successful report writing. It has to be significant. When writing a report, remember about accuracy, brevity, and clarity. Report writing must constantly strive to make his/her reader's task as easy as the subject matter permits. One more advice on writing a report is that its structure must be followed. Make sure you have an Introduction, a Body and your Conclusion.

So, whether you are writing a business report or struggling with psychological report writing, just keep these main rules in mind.

Mt Everest And The Challenge To Be A Human Being

In 1996/7, and I cant remember which year exactly, I met Cathy ODowd at a Computer Faire in Durban, South Africa. She was there to honour a sponsorship by Apple. Cathy ODowd was a member of the first South African Everest Expedition. Her team followed the route made famous by Edmund Hillary. She reached the summit on May 25, 1996. Apple had provided some sponsorship, computers etc to the expedition. She was at the Faire to talk about her climb and to give Apple some exposure.

The year 1996 was not a good year for climbing Mt Everest. During the climbing season, fifteen people died trying to reach the summit, making it the deadliest single year in the history of Mt Everest. For the novice Cathy ODowd, to have people dying was a terrible experience. It was a harsh introduction as 37 year-old British team-member and photographer Bruce Herrod died on the descent.

What she suffered the most from, was people attacking her and the rest of the parties who survived. The question she was constantly asked was why not more had been done to save the people who had died. She maintained that there was absolutely nothing that could have been done for these people and further it would have put the lives, of the people who actually made it back, in jeopardy. Her pain in defending her stance was very apparent. She certainly did not take the loss of the team member lightly.

I certainly do not blame Cathy ODowd for the death of people during her climb, or anybody else. However, I just have a question mark as to what distinguishes human beings from the animal kingdom, or other aware entities. And I always think the difference is the compassion humans have towards other human beings.

This could be in the form of the young soldier in Iraq who threw himself onto a grenade so that the others in his team were spared. Or it could be a mother giving one of her organs to her child with a disease. It could be as basic as the youngster standing up in a bus for an elderly person or the teacher in the recent United States school shooting who was killed while trying to protect his scholars.

This compassion was shown again on the latest Mt Everest climbing expedition. A Nepalese climber left to die on Everest by her team was saved today by an American guide and his sherpa who happened to pass her way after returning from their successful summit.

The two gave up their oxygen for her and struggled for 12 hours to pull her down the mountain. During this ordeal they watched another woman fall 1 000m to her death. What is even more extraordinary is the fact that they didnt actually think that the woman they were rescuing would make it. She has in fact recovered from her ordeal.

So what does it mean to be a human being? A disregard for other people, while on a quest and on a mission to achieve ones own goal, with a minimum consideration for the odds of somebody elses survival? Or is it a sign of humanity if one disregards ones own personal safety and in some cases ones own life, to help another person. I know which one I would go for if asked, what about you?
